KayDee + Cory

I have photographed her family more times than I can count on one hand, so when her boyfriend and her sister contacted me to photograph the moment her life would change, I was all in. Boyfriend Cory, wanted to propose to KayDee at one of her favorite shops in the Amana Colonies. Gerard & I spent our 5th anniversary exploring the different colonies that make up Amana proper, so when Cory mentioned KayDee's love of the Millstream Brewery, I knew exactly where I was headed. Set to arrive about 45 minutes before KayDee and her girls were, I had fun photographing some of the details of the area to help tell the story for them when they look back on this day in 50 years...

KayDee's brother-in-law got a text from her sister, Becky, saying they were about 10 minutes away supposedly continuing their Girls Day Out excursion and were set to stop at the Millstream to pick up some of KayDee's beloved root beer. I hopped back in my car to hide and make sure I had a great view of where Cory was set to go down on one knee. Gradually, KayDee realized what was happening as both sides of their family poured out of the brewery to watch the rest of their lives start. Together.

Even the owner of the Millstream was on hand to congratulate the happy couple and I pulled them away from the group after a few minutes to get just a few of them together. We have a full-on engagement session planned for later this year, so these were just some quick snapshots to document the surprise of it all and excitement.

Some details incorporating Millstream Brewery

KayDee & Cory: Congratulations you two!!! What an honor and how fun to be a part of the surprise and get to know the special man in your life, KayDee. Cory-I look forward to seeing more of you at the Cross' crazy family sessions!! Welcome to the group!!! I feel incredibly blessed to be a small part of this whole event and process that will lead you two down the aisle!

Super pumped,

Carrie

Carrie + Mike

"How's it going?" Are you getting any work done?" Carrie would somehow always find Mike in a study area of their dorm hall at Iowa State and his first thought would always be, "Of course not, you're interrupting me." But somehow, I don't think he minded the cute interruption. ;)

Years later, Mike put a ring on his Interruption's finger and wanted to make the interruption to his life permanent (if you'll allow me to take the analogy all the way to the altar...) It was my pleasure to document their love where it all began on Iowa State's campus and ironically, it started at the campanile where another wedding was taking place. We kept our distance, but couldn't keep the campanile out of their images. :)

Carrie & Mike are absolutely adorable together and after Carrie was ready to toss the heels, we got into comfy-er clothes and snapped a few on our way to their old dorm hall...

We made it to Friley Hall and frisbee players kindly gave us some distance so we could get some shots in.

Carrie + Mike: You two are so wonderful together! I had a blast getting to know you better and I'm honored that a former bridesmaid has now chosen to be a bride in front of my camera. Tell your sweet sis hello for me and best of luck on the remainder of your first year of teaching!! Hang in there till June and we'll talk soon, I'm sure commiserating over our gradebooks...

Blessings,

Carrie

Do you remember that rule of the Six Degrees of Separation? It totally rings true. I got an email from Jess with the question of not only "Are you available for our wedding day?" but also, "You wouldn't happen to be related to Dave Krupke, the speech pathologist, would you?" I was happy to answer "yes" to both of those. Jess saw my images of a mutual friend's wedding, saw my watermark on the bottom of the photos and connected the dots through Facebook to find I am married to Dave's son, whom she went to school with, Gerard. Jess is now a speech pathologist for our school district and I couldn't have been happier to photograph her with her wonderful fiance, Ben.

We started low-key and relaxed at a park they enjoy together, with football gear in tow. It was about then that I realized it was the weekend of the Iowa vs. Iowa State game and oopsy, their session was smack in the middle of it. Ben was getting score reports on his phone when we drove from spot to spot and Jess had been pampered all day in preparation for our time together-Iowa football wasn't exactly on her mind: cheese was. ;)

We played with some light while swatting at the bug clouds...

A quick drive, outfit change and score update later, we had this gorgeous light to work with:

On our way home, we spotted this glorious field near Norwalk and had a hay day with it. Or a sunflower day, if you will...

Jess + Ben: Thank you so much for your sacrifice Ben! Not only for missing the Iowa football fun, but also for your service to our country. Jess, you are gorgeous and lovely to work with. Your spunk and easy laughter made photographing you two a breeze and I can't wait for your beautiful day next May!

Blessings,

Carrie

Kelsi + Tyler

They both graduated from Norwalk High School and somehow landed at University of Northern Iowa together as well. Kelsi continued her love of cheer by being on the squad at UNI that facilitates cheering events for younger kids with any kind of social/emotional/physical difficulty. And Tyler has continued his interest in politics by considering pre-law after helping run a local campaign. Sound busy? Ummm, yes. But we all took a pause from a hectic, semi-stressful day to enjoy some time in front of my camera. And I'm happy to say that snuggling your fiance is a fantastic way to unwind from a hard day's work. ;)

We found a few different places around Norwalk, as we were racing against the loss of light for the day...

Nothing says "Iowa Summer" more than jeans, a barn, and a warm summer evening with the love of you life...

We couldn't ignore where their friendship began and headed over to Norwalk High School. While Kelsi + Tyler were there, Norwalk was able to build a brand new stadium and auditorium. Yes, the new stadium is an incredible facility, but we had a hankering for old time's sake and stayed with the old stadium's seats with a great view:

Kelsi, you are gorgeous!

Tyler + Kelsi-Thank you so much for the honor of photographing not just this time in your lives, but your wedding next year as well! I love hearing how things are coming together and I know it will be a fantastic day for you. Best of luck with your school year as you wrap things up and look forward to creating a life together!

Blessings,

Carrie

I am truly blessed by the clients that I have because they inevitably turn into friends. I photographed Emily + Jon's wedding last year, so you can imagine how excited I was to learn that Jody had popped the question to Emily's sister, Rachel, this year! I ran into Rachel at a church event while she was visiting her sister & parents, got to gush over the ring Jody picked out for her, and hear all about the plans they're making together.

While studying at University of Iowa, Rachel & Jody met at a mutual friend's shin-dig and things took their natural course to becoming official.  Now successful graduates, living in Indianapolis, "Indy" as they call it, and working in sports-Jody for the Indianapolis Colts and Rachel for Sports Authority-they enjoy putting their degrees to use, together. Now, they're planning a destination wedding to a gorgeous island locale and have asked me to photograph their engagement and state-side reception.

We started their engagement session at Grey's Lake and caught up like old friends almost as much as we actually took photos. :)

Jody & Rachel changed outfits and we used another area of the park for different scenery and feel.

We headed downtown after an outfit change and enjoyed the view from the state capitol.

Rachel + Jody: It was such a pleasure photographing you and hanging out with you! I love it when I feel like an old friend with a fancy camera. Watching you two love on each other, thoroughly enjoy each other's company, I can only imagine how the celebration is going to go on your island destination. I also can't wait till I get to document your reception next year! Best of luck in the planning process and logistics.

Blessings,

Carrie
