Behind The Scenes : 2017

What a year it's been for Carrie Krupke Photography, LLC!! I didn't think it was possible to be more sure of the fact that I have the best clients in the world-but this year surpassed yet again! While I didn't have as many weddings this year where a second shooter was secretly getting photos of me at work, I do have a TON of "funnies" on our family sessions that make up for the gap. :)

I want to start with the Dads of my families. They do a fantastic job helping me, wrangling (bribing) kids and sometimes getting beat on (or getting a workout) in the process. Take a look:

Not to be outdone, Mamas had their fair share of windy hair days, bribery moments, but always in good fun. And they were 100% ALL IN to make their photos what they wanted, willing to do whatever I asked to make the magic happen. That sometimes meant slobbery kisses, or just getting slobbered on in general, last minute hair touch ups, adjusting clothing and poses and ample silly faces:

From there, kids had their fair share of silly, flying, sad moments....

And yes, other photographers and their clients got this close to us (on, thankfully, just one occasion):

And just like Maisie, I thought, "Give the girl her space!"

We were able to catch some mid sneezes!

Next up: The newborns and maternity sessions. We beat back the bugs, had silly fun and it seemed that on several of the sessions, Mamas would capture me working with their babies on their phones. Thank you for grabbing these moments for me ladies!!

Last up: Wedding day moments!

Lastly, we always have fun testing our light set up for family photos!

Ok Ok, here's the real end and wrap up to this post. Fun story: I shot a wedding for my cousin, Ali in 2015 and asked Colby to second shoot with me since both Ali was UNI alum and Colby was UNI's mascot at one point in his collegiate career. At her wedding, Colby leaned over to me and whispered, "Who is that beautiful girl?" He was noticing Ali's little sister, Jenny. I advised him to be good (as if he has another possibility in his personality). Long story short, Colby popped the question to my sweet cousin Jenny just a few days ago and I couldn't be more excited!! This photo is a perfect send-off to 2017 as Colby was a second shooter for me again this year and deployed his drone for a great farewell shot:

I could not do what I do without incredible clients, outstanding second shooters (Colby & Sarah!) and a supportive husband who lets me do this crazy business that has been such a wild ride this year.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for a wonderful 2017!

Christen + Chase : Engaged

Referred to me by my often-right-hand-man on wedding days, Christen emailed me and I knew from that instant we'd be a great fit for their wedding next fall. After our initial consultation over FaceTime, it further confirmed my suspicions that whoever grabbed Christen's attention on Tinder that particular day must be quite a man. Chase is soft spoken, but clearly knows what he wants and is confident in the direction they are headed. We started our session downtown in front of the capitol, stopped briefly at Grey's Lake and then headed to Christen's parent's house in West Des Moines.

We got some cheers, "atta way!"'s and "congrats!" as we took these photos at Grey's Lake and joggers, walkers and the occasional pups meandered by. This happy couple just lapped it up and Christen couldn't help but bend to pet almost every pup that came our way.

After seeing how Christen loved on strangers' pooches, I couldn't wait to meet Axel at her folks' place:

The only time I was slightly nervous for Axel's presence was when deer came into our shot! Would he run after them? Christen hung on to his leash just in time to keep Axel from launching. The first photo with the red tree in it? You can see the profile of the deer on the right side!

Christen + Chase: Thank you so much for having me be a part of this time in your lives! I'm so excited to see how your wedding day comes together (and how Axel plays a role!). Enjoy this time and cherish the memories made!
Blessings on the process,

Carrie

Abby + Ben : Married!

What a day for these two! We started off early at the hockey rink for Barrin's senior photos and (I later found out we all took an afternoon nap!) then Barrin's dad, Ben, made it official with my fun friend Abby! When she first told me "Palmer's", I thought to myself, "As in, Palmer's Deli?" and sure enough, the folks at Palmer's know how to create the sweetest wedding venue that was just right for the type of event Abby & Ben wanted to create. Small, intimate and laid-back. Because everything for the day was right here, we were able to squeeze in the basics in a narrow window of time as they made Things "officially official".

Once Ben arrived, we had him hang out on the patio and Barrin and Ben's dad helped him get the final touches complete in time for the First Look:

Abby, you are such a stunner! :) The moments between you and your Dad were so sweet and endearing. This day was probably record holding in many ways (a senior session and a wedding for the same family in the same day, being one) including a ceremony AND family portraits done in under 30 minutes total. Whew! Way to go! I'm sending a virtual high five!

Abby + Ben: Thank you so much for trusting me with SO much of your family's history on this day! (And the Cyclones made history on this day too for you!) You will forever hold a special place in my heart and I wish you nothing but the best on your school year and your future together as Mr. & Mrs!

Blessings,

Carrie

Their day was incredibly personalized and special. I know that can be said of most weddings, but when you host your ceremony in your own backyard after hours of work landscaping it yourself and you've built your own altar, I'd say letting your guests into your home is highly personal! Ashlee + Alex are starting their life together as a blended family, if you will-Ashlee has two children: Maddi + Austin who played their roles for the day quite well!

We started off the day split-Colby headed to their home where the guys were watching football and getting ready. I headed to an AirB&B that Ashlee + Alex had reserved for a small honeymoon getaway for the Labor Day weekend. It was an acreage outside of Des Moines, complete with barns and horses and a long winding gravel drive. Beautiful, serene and secluded!

See what I mean? Alex + Ashlee refer to their backyard as their oasis, their calm in the storms. And I couldn't agree more!

The limo picked the ladies up and we headed to their home where Maddi had a first look with Alex first. I loved how girls, no matter the age, love to twirl. Maddi did so first, and Ashlee did a 360 as well-even though they hadn't seen the others' First Looks! It's just innate in our character as women: we love to twirl!

Ashlee + Alex did so much of their wedding on their own-including building their altar from birch wood tree trunks. It was a gorgeous setting and one that will stay in their backyard for years to come!

I think this is the first Silly String exit I've photographed and I'm so thankful none of my gear got covered. It sure made for great shots of their recessional!!

While they were greeting their guests, Colby and I headed to the Simpson Barn where the reception would be. We had some fun with Colby's drone and enjoyed the peaceful, calming landscapes and yes, Ashlee & Alex planted each of those succulent favors for their guests!

Ashlee + Alex: Thank you so much for having me document your beautiful day! Thank you also for agreeing to your first dances outside of the barn-I hope you feel it was a good decision for the photos we captured. Blessings on your marriage, your school year and the transition to a family of four in addition to being married!

All the best,

Carrie

I have watched this family evolve over the course of 5 years or so now and I love the smiles we caught on their morning. And by "caught", I mean quite literally "caught". Ms. Amelia is an apple that doesn't fall far from her brother's tree and when he was her current age, he was on. the. run! Amelia is also in a stage that she loves being within her Mama's shadow, so with some Grandma and Grandpa Help, we snuck in some engagement photos of Melissa & Ryan for their New Year's Eve wedding!! So, every smile we caught was an incredible victory in my photographic "Win" Book!

After their quick trip around the green with Grandma and Grandpa, Jaxon and Amelia joined us again with Ava, their adorable schnauzer! A quick outfit change and the kiddos really let loose and showed me they were super comfortable with where we were. And I was super thankful!

Ms. Amelia-you are a gorgeous little lady! With spunk and vivacity that will carry you far in life! Jaxon, you are such a wonderful older brother and a bonefide little gentleman!

Melissa + Ryan: I'm so excited to see how your day comes together for New Year's Eve! I know you've jumped through a lot of hurdles and have faced some challenges along the way, but I now you know that it's worth every minute when you find the One your heart desires. Thank you so much for having me be a part of the adventure.

Blessings,
Carrie
