Abby + Ben

Abby + Ben

Abby and I first met in conducting class at Drake and I remember looking up to her as a musician, educator, performer and conductor. Abby plays viola for the Des Moines Symphony and teaches in a nearby school district. It would only be natural that her daughter, Ms. Bella is taking up viola as well. When your Mama is a pro, you know you're destined for great things!

I was thrilled to find out that Abby had a special someone in her life and over the moon ecstatic when Ben popped the question. When you are blending a family, it only seemed right to include Bella and Ben's son Barrin in a few group shots as well. They were great sports about it and even though Abby was a little concerned about the boys (since they are always goofy in photos at home), the boys were excellent and I wouldn't have guessed them for goofs at all! ;)

We did a few more family by the water, some of just Abby with Bella and some of just Ben with Barrin too.

Here's the fun part with just Ben & Abby. I can't wait to see how their wedding day comes together in October!

Abby & Ben (Bella & Barrin): Thank you so much for having me out with you guys! I'm so excited for your family as you start a life together as a group of four! Blessings on your school year transition from summer and the last mad-dash of the planning process for October. I know it's going to be full of joy and laughter (and maybe a few goof-balls) ;)

Blessings,

Carrie

Ashlee + Alex

Referred to me by a sweet friend, Ashlee & Alex contacted me to photograph their wedding this upcoming Labor Day weekend. When we were discussing where to shoot their photos, they suggested their back yard right away because it has definitely been a labor of love for them. I arrived at their house for the start of our time together, and my jaw was on the floor when they took me to the back. Their labor is definitely evident in the details, their plants, the deck, the stream bed and furniture. I kinda didn't want to leave-it really is a perfect place to spend time and lounge, and come their wedding day, it will also be where they say "I do".

One of my favorite parts of their yard is that it isn't enclosed, separate from their neighbors, and we got to take advantage of a huge ancient tree that has been witness to their kids playing with neighbor kids for years. Oh, the stories I'm sure it could tell!

The other spot Ashlee + Alex mentioned being a favorite: Mullet's. Where they had their first date and closed the place down. No one really knew there were still customers up on the rooftop deck of the bar/grill until they went to lock the doors. From Mullet's, you have a beautiful view of downtown Des Moines and Principal Park where the ICubs play. The night of their first date, there were fireworks after the ball game, but also fireworks on the rooftop of Mullet's...

Ashlee + Alex: Thank you so much for having me!! You two are too sweet and adorable to put into words and I can't wait to see how your backyard transforms into the ceremony venue of your dreams!

All the best,

Carrie

Katie + Phil

After being twice delayed for rain, and with their newly-scheduled session anticipating rain as well, I jumped on the only sunny day we had left in the next 10! Katie & Phil graciously rescheduled and we got it done! Phew!

It's such a wonderful love story when a couple knows each other as friends first. For Katie + Phil, in the middle of their dating, Facebook reminded them that it was a 9 year friendship, and they realized, "What are we waiting for?" Shortly thereafter, Katie's finger was boasting some serious bling and they set a date for this June.

After serving alongside each other in the same Bible study group, Phil was going to observe Katie for the summer and prayerfully consider asking her out. But after serving with Phil on a church-wide community service project for an entire weekend, Katie beat him to the punch. Again, "Why wait?"

Since it was the first time the sun had peeked out in over a week, any park we went to was crawling with families, photographers, joggers and bikers, so we did our best to find tucked-away places and spring blooms.

We headed to the waaaaay back of Waterworks park and found this dreamy spot!

Sunset light by the river? Yes, please!

A quick outfit change and change of scene...

Katie + Phil: You guys are so wonderful!! I can't wait till your wedding day to see how everything comes together. Thank you so much for having me, for rescheduling so much and waiting for the right time to get the best shots!

You're the best,

Carrie

Kaydee + Cory

If you've been following this blog for any length of time, you've probably seen Kaydee's family grace the screen every year as it's grown from a family of four, to include a brother-in-law and subsequently a nephew and a niece. Following their family as it's grown has always left me wondering what God's plan for Kaydee was going to look like in the long term. Sometimes, it might have felt like a long time, but it seems to have zipped by now that Kaydee has Cory in her life.

I had the pleasure of photographing Cory's proposal and now, their engagement session was one of the last on my calendar prior to going on maternity leave. They graciously moved their session time to be 7:30am so that we could beat some of the heat. While it was still "weather you could wear", it wasn't nearly as bad as the hours after we were done!

I loved watching Cory dote on Kaydee-so sweet!!

Even at 8:15am, we were seeking a shady spot with a breeze this particular morning, and found the perfect spot under MLK/Fleur Dr for a change of scenery and temps. But it definitely didn't change how snuggly these two were:

These might be among my favorites of the morning:

Cory + Kaydee: Thank you so much for having me and for working around my needs as we anticipate Baby Boy! I so appreciate being an honorary part of the family while you prepare to get married and I can't wait to see what the day looks like in November!

Blessings,
Carrie

Emily + Lucas : Engaged

Emily + Lucas : Engaged

This couple is after my own heart. Emily teaches 4th grade in Perry, Iowa and Lucas works at a bank in Indianola, but is totally a foodie who can refer you to any kind of eatery in downtown Des Moines. Additionally, even though Emily teaches 4th grade, she's qualified to teach K-12 music and even sang from 'Enchanted' while we took pictures. I felt completely at home with them and can't wait for their October nuptials as I'm sure their guests will feel the exact same way.

While we dodged the prom-goers all over downtown, we started at the Simon Estes Ampitheatre to give a view of the downtown skyline:

We walked across the bridge to the World Food Prize and used this beautiful line of flowering trees to highlight the season in which their engagement photos were captured.

Like I mentioned earlier, we dodged prom-goers, but we couldn't exactly dodge the parking spaces their cars took up. We had a doozy of a time finding a place just to grab this shot, but it was worth the effort and Lucas & Emily didn't mind a dose of hazardous-driving adventure down alleyways and parking miracles. Because, of any place she'd like to be, Emily feels Lucas' arms is the place to be no matter where they are:

True to Lucas's tastes, we lastly hit up the Scenic Route Bakery, grabbed a coffee and enjoyed the ambiance of one of their favorite coffee places:

Lucas + Emily-Man, your flexibility and good humor will get you through SO much in life together. I cannot wait for your wedding day to see how your personalities shine through from start to finish. There isn't a doubt in my mind it will be one for the record books. Enjoy the process and each other on the journey!

Blessings,

Carrie
