2017 Favorites

What a year! We pushed the limits of light: in-house light, bright light without shade, ice hockey rink light, auditorium and jazz club light with off-camera flash, bouncing light off reflectors, the list goes on and on... We challenged locations too: bedrooms, living rooms, studios, jazz clubs, inside the capitol, in water, in a RIVER. We celebrated new jobs, new babies, new homes, answers to health issues and healthy marriages.

These sessions represent victories in getting a stubborn child to smile (finally!), a child relaxing on her Mama's shoulder for comfort after a tough day, scheduling snafus, forgetting of camera gear to a session (that was me! ugh), getting off-camera flash to work, getting huge props borrowed and lined up for a session, getting a newborn to lay "just so" for the right shot, working the sunlight so that it was "just right". Challenges answered by victories that made me a better photographer, businesswoman and person.

I truly have the best clients on earth and I'm so thankful for the year that 2017 was for my business! This one's for you!!

Christen + Chase : Engaged

Referred to me by my often-right-hand-man on wedding days, Christen emailed me and I knew from that instant we'd be a great fit for their wedding next fall. After our initial consultation over FaceTime, it further confirmed my suspicions that whoever grabbed Christen's attention on Tinder that particular day must be quite a man. Chase is soft spoken, but clearly knows what he wants and is confident in the direction they are headed. We started our session downtown in front of the capitol, stopped briefly at Grey's Lake and then headed to Christen's parent's house in West Des Moines.

We got some cheers, "atta way!"'s and "congrats!" as we took these photos at Grey's Lake and joggers, walkers and the occasional pups meandered by. This happy couple just lapped it up and Christen couldn't help but bend to pet almost every pup that came our way.

After seeing how Christen loved on strangers' pooches, I couldn't wait to meet Axel at her folks' place:

The only time I was slightly nervous for Axel's presence was when deer came into our shot! Would he run after them? Christen hung on to his leash just in time to keep Axel from launching. The first photo with the red tree in it? You can see the profile of the deer on the right side!

Christen + Chase: Thank you so much for having me be a part of this time in your lives! I'm so excited to see how your wedding day comes together (and how Axel plays a role!). Enjoy this time and cherish the memories made!
Blessings on the process,

Carrie

I have watched this family evolve over the course of 5 years or so now and I love the smiles we caught on their morning. And by "caught", I mean quite literally "caught". Ms. Amelia is an apple that doesn't fall far from her brother's tree and when he was her current age, he was on. the. run! Amelia is also in a stage that she loves being within her Mama's shadow, so with some Grandma and Grandpa Help, we snuck in some engagement photos of Melissa & Ryan for their New Year's Eve wedding!! So, every smile we caught was an incredible victory in my photographic "Win" Book!

After their quick trip around the green with Grandma and Grandpa, Jaxon and Amelia joined us again with Ava, their adorable schnauzer! A quick outfit change and the kiddos really let loose and showed me they were super comfortable with where we were. And I was super thankful!

Ms. Amelia-you are a gorgeous little lady! With spunk and vivacity that will carry you far in life! Jaxon, you are such a wonderful older brother and a bonefide little gentleman!

Melissa + Ryan: I'm so excited to see how your day comes together for New Year's Eve! I know you've jumped through a lot of hurdles and have faced some challenges along the way, but I now you know that it's worth every minute when you find the One your heart desires. Thank you so much for having me be a part of the adventure.

Blessings,
Carrie

I have worked alongside Jen for HOURS each year in just a few short weekends' worth of Upwards Basketball team photos for our church. I'm always so thankful for her company! So, naturally, when I found out there was someone special in her life, I eagerly awaited the phone call when he popped the question and they got to pop in front of my camera.

We started at Principal Park area partly because Jacob loves sports and partly because it was among the very few places that had green grass in Des Moines at the time. (talk about drought!) Jen brought her pup along for the fun (and a friend to hold the leash when we were done with Bella's part!).

A few slobbery kisses (from Bella, not each other) later and we walked over to the river walkway/bike trail. I love this spot because there isn't any vehicle traffic with a great view of downtown. This part was safe, for sure. It's the following adventure we took that was semi-questionable. :)

Yup, we ventured into the river itself since it's been so dry and there were awesome log dams that had developed as a result. Our shoes were full of sand, yes. But I'd say it was totally worth it!

After a quick outfit change, we used another spot near the walk/bike trail bridge, minus the sand. :)

Jacob + Jen: I cannot wait to see how things unfold for you in April!! Thank you so much for having me out with you for photos, for taking risks and trusting me and my eye to capture you two as you seem to me-totally in love and having tons of fun together. Get ready for the wild ride that is Marriage!! Just like our adventure into the river-you may get some sand in your shoes and be uncomfortable at times, but the results are totally, unquestionably worth it!

Blessings,

Carrie

Abby + Ben

Abby and I first met in conducting class at Drake and I remember looking up to her as a musician, educator, performer and conductor. Abby plays viola for the Des Moines Symphony and teaches in a nearby school district. It would only be natural that her daughter, Ms. Bella is taking up viola as well. When your Mama is a pro, you know you're destined for great things!

I was thrilled to find out that Abby had a special someone in her life and over the moon ecstatic when Ben popped the question. When you are blending a family, it only seemed right to include Bella and Ben's son Barrin in a few group shots as well. They were great sports about it and even though Abby was a little concerned about the boys (since they are always goofy in photos at home), the boys were excellent and I wouldn't have guessed them for goofs at all! ;)

We did a few more family by the water, some of just Abby with Bella and some of just Ben with Barrin too.

Here's the fun part with just Ben & Abby. I can't wait to see how their wedding day comes together in October!

Abby & Ben (Bella & Barrin): Thank you so much for having me out with you guys! I'm so excited for your family as you start a life together as a group of four! Blessings on your school year transition from summer and the last mad-dash of the planning process for October. I know it's going to be full of joy and laughter (and maybe a few goof-balls) ;)

Blessings,

Carrie
